abraham cruzvillegas - artist´s talk
Mexican artist Abraham Cruzvillegas grounds his practice in the concept of autoconstrucción, or self-construction. His art engages a process of building, rebuilding, transformation, and decay through the use of everyday objects and domestic refuse.
The artist takes inspiration from growing up in the harsh landscape and difficult living conditions of Colonia Ajusco, a squatter community that emerged in the 1960s in a volcanic stone area originally deemed uninhabitable. Through sculpture, painting, drawing, installation, performance, and video, Cruzvillegas recalls the arduous and precarious process of constructing, deconstructing, and reconstructing family homes, and by extension, personal and collective identities, within favelas worldwide.
