dr. lakra – new york art book fair

Since its founding in 1999 as a contemporary art gallery, kurimanzutto has supported publications and editorial projects communicating the work of artists it represents through its Mexico City imprint kurimanzutto libros. For the 2018 New York Art Book Fair, kurimanzutto libros presents a solo booth by cult artist and publisher Dr. Lakra, focusing on his ongoing practice of collage, printmaking, tattooing, and collaborative artist editions, which explore his interest in anthropology, popular culture, world iconography, music, taboos and fetishes. A master of combining collected ephemera as a form of language, Dr. Lakra will present publications ranging from special numbered editions signed by the artist for collectors, to photocopied fanzines available at a very low cost for the general public. The presentation will also contain original art objects, artist books, multiples and most of the publications that artist has to date.

In addition to publications and objects, the booth will host a selection of intervened mezcal bottles from the series Los dos amigos, created in collaboration with artist Abraham Cruzvillegas. For the bottling process the two artists jointly created labels adhered to recycled liquor bottles from parties and gatherings. Little by little these bottles have formed a collection that reveals a particular and unique dialogue between the artists that created them. The bottles reveal shared formal concerns, reappropriated imagery, and recurrent creative interpretations in ther work. The process of creating these bottles is entirely hand-made and artisanal, from the production and bottling of the mezcal to the design of each label.
