Adrián Villar Rojas presents Sometimes you wonder, in an interconnected universe, who is dreaming who?, a special project conceived for Tank Shanghai that brings together sculptures from the series The Theater of Disappearance. Presented as a sequence of exhibitions around the world, this project that was shown throughout 2017-2018 at the Roof Garden Commission at the Metropolitan Museum, Kunsthaus Bregenz, NEON Foundation at Athens National Observatory, and The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA Los Angeles. Borrowing and lending from the artist’s own inventory of production, the series takes its origins from previous projects including Planetarium (Sharjah Biennial 12, 2015), The Most Beautiful of All Mothers (Istanbul Biennial, 2015), and Rinascimento (Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Torino, 2016).

For his first solo project in China, Villar Rojas and his studio have produced artworks bound together in a genealogy that uncovers the long and torturous path across the time and space of the origins of each art piece. The sculptures have been extracted from the comprehensive environment created by Villar Rojas at the time of The Theater of Disappearance series and gathered as signifiers of interconnection, history, reality, and what the viewer can imagine a possible alternative future to be. The sculptural work in Sometimes you wonder, in an interconnected universe, who is dreaming who? traces the chronology of their origins through the materials they are made from and the physical and mental landscapes they refer to. A comprehensive visual map of the exhibition and the concepts it encompasses (in the form of a booklet) provides the keys to reading and navigating Villar Rojas’ creative process.
