news: Art Basel Miami Beach 2023

kurimanzutto is pleased to present our selection of works for Art Basel Miami Beach 2023. This year’s presentation fuses together many of the active themes our artists have been working through in recent times, from intimate self-reflections through abstraction and representation, socio-political critique, and material explorations.

Nature and abstraction are recurring ideas which Gabriel Orozco has been returning to in his newest body of work. Organic compositions abstracted from nature, fossilize the ephemeral through the exploration of ancient tempera techniques. Petrit Halilaj’s personal connection to nature is conveyed by the strongly featured representations of animals in his work, using a delicate feather to transform each sculpture into a special character of the artist’s personal mythology. Matter becomes a central exploration for Damián Ortega, who explores the maturity and virtue of material by allowing it to mutate from liquid to solid. Separately, Nairy Baghramian creates a space where all material elements of her work resonate with a visible correlation and an inherent potential for interdependence and connectivity, similar to the human body.

Gestures, marks and scratches on the canvas surfaces of Oscar Murillo and aluminium AI universes of WangShui, expose the various ways their painterly explorations act as portals into these alternative ways of thinking. WangShui creates their paintings through a complex collaboration with AI, developing programs to algorithmically generate new images from previous paintings in a process the artist calls “machine painting”. Alternatively, Murillo has opted to collaborate with children and their accumulation of both conscious and unconscious markings to create wearable works in the form of suits. The construction of fashion is navigated by Barbara Sanchez-Kane through a practice that investigates hegemonic masculinity, the social construction of gender and sexual identity, and the ways in which each presents themselves in daily life. Recent sculptural works by Gabriel Kuri, Leonor Antunes, and Haegue Yang complete the selection.
